Kun Maupay Man It Panahon: A timely film that took seven years and 11 production companies to become a reality

December 25, 2021

"Kun Maupay Man It Panahon," translates as "Whether the Weather is Fine," is the number one  ASEAN movie of 2021 according  Asian Movie Pulse.

With the recent news about the devastation brought by typhoon Odette hitting the headlines, the subject of the of Metro Manila Film Festival entry film Kun Maupay Man It Panahon (which opens in theaters nationwide on December 25) is as timely as ever. The globally recognized drama film starring Charo Santos, Daniel Padilla and newcomer Rans Rifol, tells of the aftermath of 2013 supertyphoon Yolanda. Kun Maupay Man It Panahon is inspired by director Carlo Francisco Manatad’s own experience of looking for his family in Tacloban because he could not reach them for days.

Carlo recalls what happened very vividly. “I tried to contact them but all reception and communication lines were damaged, and seeing the news then, one would think no one would survive the storm. Luckily, I was able to hitch in a plane carrying relief goods. I was the only passenger. When I arrived, my hometown was beyond recognition. All roads, structures, and any form of landmarks were gone. Mountains of dead bodies were scattered everywhere.”

After what seemed to be the longest day of his life, Carlo managed to find his loved ones—all 16 of them plus their family dog—alive and well. When the young filmmaker returned to Manila to resume work (he was doing film editing at that time), he could not shake off what he went through.

Ms. Charo Santos

Rans Rifol

Daniel Padilla

Those days in Tacloban have now led to an outstanding full-length feature (Carlo’s first) starring an acclaimed actress-producer, today’s most celebrated matinee idol, and a rising actress. All thanks to the persistence of Carlo and his collaborators, and the backing of 11 companies from five different countries. Kun Maupay Man It Panahon is truly an international movie as it is produced by Cinematografica (Philippines),  planc (Philippines), House on Fire (France)| iWantTFC (Philippines), Globe Studios (Philippines), Black Sheep (Philippines), Quantum Films (Philippines), AAND Company (Singapore), KawanKawan Media (Indonesia), Weydemann Bros. (Germany), and CMB Films (Philippines).

The film had its world premiere at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland where it took home the Youth Jury Prize, and got raves at the Toronto International Film Festival. Canadian film critic Henry Tan of Universal Cinema hailed it for its two major feats: 1) using the dialect of Waray as the dialogue, and 2) bringing attention to how the Philippines responded to the aftermath of Yolanda. He wrote, “Carlo Francisco Manatad has done a great job in bringing awareness of this historical typhoon event in the Philippines. Whether the Weather is Fine… reminds the audience about the humanity in coming together to help the survivors move forward from a devastation.”

Kun Maupay Man It Panahon has traveled to 25 international film fests in a span of five months. During that time, it also won Special Mention by the Jury at the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico and Best Director at the London East Asia Film Festival in the UK.

Carlo says, “Our team is thankful for the chance to bring our movie home as it tackles something we must live with. I feel it is important to discuss the reality of natural calamities in this generation we are in. A lot has been said about Filipino resilience especially in the wake of disasters--- both natural and otherwise---to the point that it has become cliché.

"Major typhoons have been happening more often so Odette's occurrence comes as no surprise... I think I speak on behalf of my co-filmmakers when I say that climate change and disaster preparedness are the more urgent issues. These should be addressed by everyone and not be 'masked' or neglected by the sentimentality of resilience."

Jhassy Busran: An achiever ... an award-winning young actress

December 23, 2021

Jhassy Busran

When I was invited to grace the face to fsce interview cum mediacon for this young and fresh face Jasmine "Jhassy" Busran, I got real curious.

You see, in this whole crazy and very much circus-sy world of entertainment, one has to be so brave, not only talented, with full of confidence, smart, ambitious, easy to be with, gracious and of course must make a "mark" in this industry called showbiz.

Luckily for us mere mortals in this side of Hollywood, the blooming and blossoming of our own jasmine, comes in the person of Jhassy Bustan, a miss of fifteen seasons, supposedly the age when Juliet Capulet met the love of her life, Romeo Montague, in that lovely city of fair Verona.

Currently, the young miss born under the astrological sign of Virgo is in her 9th grade at the Mission Christian School, with the King’s Language, English as her favorite school subject. On the side, she is a varsity player of their table tennis team.

Jhassy is most modest about some of her scholastic achievements: “I graduated salutatorian with 7 awards. With the guidance of my parents, teachers and God definitely, I am a consistent honor student since kinder. I also played Table tennis in BULPRISA before and won a silver medal. I’ve became title holder of Bb Kalinisan twice and Ms. Intramurals 2019.”

She is Swiftie, listens and appreciates all the penned compositions of international singing sensation Taylor Swift. Locally she idolizes Pop Royalty Sarah Geronimo-Guidicelli, the Pinoy Pop Kings SB19 and the oh so ripe to become a supermodel, Maymay Entrata.

When it comes to her top picks in acting, Busran declares: “I’m an avid fan of Ms. Kathryn Bernardo since 2012 I really love how she acts and her personality. I look up to Ms. Sylvia Sanchez too because of her versatility.”

Her current eye candies are SB19’s Ken Suson, Daniel Padilla and Donny Pangilinan.
In the movie “Caught In the Act” she is: “I am Daisy Sison, the best friend of Elaine Cruz which Andi Abaya portrays,” says Jhassy. “My character in the movie is a nerd but not the typical one. She has a social life. She has great friends. She prioritizes her studies pero di niya kinakalimutan maging masaya.”

When I asked about how did she relate to her character in the movie and about having "loveteams" in showbiz, please watch this:

Her preparations for the role, she shares: “When I have a new role to portray I just always think that I have to wear the shoes, the feelings and thoughts of my character. And Daisy and I are somewhat similar. I am also I am also prioritizing my studies but at the same time, I balance it with quality time with my family and friends.”
“My experience in being part of ‘Caught In the Act, I would never forget,”Jhassy avers. “I made a lot of fun and good memories with my co-actors. They were guiding me all throughout the shoot. I also discovered that I can focus pala ng matagal.” She cannot help but guffaw after that reveal.

What makes her unique, she comes clean: “A lot of people say that I have a matured mindset despite my young age. Having that as my uniqueness, I think can invest more emotions and truth to the characters that hopefully will be offered to me.”

She does not say nay to the possibility of having a love team. Her explanation: “I will accept it for as long as alam ko naman po na masaya ako sa ginagawa ko with my partner and together, we bring joy and positivity to people.”

Busran is undeniably serious in acting. Her efforts are not in vain since she won international acting awards for the short film she starred in billed “Pugon”.

In the Gabby Ramos directed short film about child laborers, she bagged the best of the best performance of actress award in the International Film Festival Manhattan in New York and as best child actress in Gully International Film Festival in India.

The short film, which also had seasoned actor Soliman Cruz as cast, was shown as a film in exhibition in the online edition of Ciemalaya, the most prestigious film festival for independently produced motion pictures.

Busran promises: “I know that I always do my best in everything. I can promise them na di ko sila bibiguin at kaya ko. I am a strong willed person and I am confident with my talents.”

Jhassy is really indeed a "not the ordinary girl" type that we could just meet and be seen somewhere. She is an achiever in her own generation, she already knows what to do in her future. Being a risk-taker and a lover of challenges, Jhas has made a "mark" in every field she engages to. And now that she has entered showbusiness, she has emerged again. Triumphant as ever!

Good luck to you Jhassy girl may all your endeavors in life come true.

When you care about your health, let Lunguard take care of your lungs

December 19, 2021

Lunguard Chewable Vitamns

Our lungs play a very vital role in our respiratory system. The lungs are responsible for removing carbon dioxide from the blood and adding oxygen to it. The heart and lungs work together to do this.

So we can just imagine the importance and the primary function of lungs to our life, right?! Most of the bacterial and viral related diseases enter our body through our respiratory system that's why the lungs is considered to be a susceptible organ.

And for us, individuals, the real and only way to counteract this is by boosting our lung immunity. We're all pretty much aware that this dreadful Covid 19 virus primarily enters through our nasal cavity aside from its passage though our eyes, right?  So guys, please please... don't let our guard down... let Lunguard take over and guard our lungs!

If we truly care for our health, we should protect and boost. Chew one tablet a day of Lunguard for daily immunity. Know the great reasons why we should trust Lunguard to take care of our lungs:

  • Lunguard contains the  award-winning US patented Snow Pear young fruit extract together with 9 more natural herbs and botanicals that BOOSTS your lung immunity, ENHANCES your lung function and IMPROVES your breathing
  • Lunguard is the first natural vitamins for lung immunity in the Philippines duly approved by Philippine FDA.
  • Lunguard US patented snow pear your fruit extract
    • Gold Medalist 2017 Geneva Invention Awards
    • Gold Medalist 2019 Canadian iCAN International Invention Innovation Awards
  • Manufactured in an ISO 22000, NSF GMP Certified and HACCP Certified facility in Taiwan.
  • Chewable- no need for water. It has Lemon & mint taste that soothes.
  • Plant-based, NON GMO, Sugar-free, Cholesterol-free

These are the nine natural herbs and botanicals

Today, the statement "Health is wealth," has probably proven its truest meaning and importance. We are now more inclined to acquiring air-borne diseases since we are all exposed to pollutants, chemical fumes, irritants and air-born diseases. If only we could all realize and take the necessary actions like having the best supplement to protect and guard ourselves from any sickness, be health conscious, be physically active and eat a balanced diet then we don't have anything to worry about. Still, the best cure is still prevention.

Lemon-Dou® launches in the Philippines

December 18, 2021

One of Japan’s leading chu-hi drinks bound to make waves as Coca-Cola introduces its first alcoholic drink in the country

Manila, Philippines — Lemon-Dou®, one of Japan’s growing chu-hi drinks, is now available in the Philippines in three different variants. The entry of Lemon-Dou® in the country is seen as a response to the increasing demand for refreshing lemon alcoholic drinks and marks the first alcoholic beverage brand in the growing beverage portfolio of Coca-Cola in the Philippines.

Lemon-Dou, a Japanese-crafted chu-hi drink and one of Japan’s Nikkei Trendy Top 5 trends in 2020 is now available in the Philippines.

“At Coca-Cola, we’ve always strived to deliver innovations that center around what our consumers want, while ensuring that we evolve our business responsibly and sustainably as well. We continue to be bullish on our business here in the Philippines amidst the ongoing challenges of the pandemic — and the launch of Lemon-Dou, our first alcoholic brand in the country, is a tangible proof of that commitment. We are confident that Lemon-Dou will help further accelerate the high-growth trajectory of flavored alcoholic drinks in the country," said Tony del Rosario, President of Coca-Cola Philippines.

Inspired from the southern province of Kyushu, Japan – the birthplace of shochÅ« over 500 years ago – Lemon-Dou was first introduced by Coca-Cola in Japan in 2018. After two years, the lemon-flavored alcoholic drink became one of Japan’s Nikkei Trendy top 5 trends in 2020.

The entry of Lemon-Dou® in the country is seen as a response to the growing demand for lemon sour drinks and marks the first alcoholic beverage brand in the growing beverage portfolio of Coca-Cola in the Philippines.

True to the Japanese philosophy of Kodawari, we’re very proud of how we have tapped into the strength of our global network to ensure that the quality of Lemon-Dou remains consistent when served to the Filipino legal age drinkers.”

Lemon-Dou is a play on “lemon,” the drink’s main ingredient, and the Japanese word “dou,” meaning house. Literally translated to “The House of Lemon,” Lemon-Dou uses crushed whole lemons, infused in alcohol and mixed with bubbles, which creates the great tasting, refreshing and full-bodied lemon-sour experience for the alcohol drinkers.

Brighter, steadier, smarter: How smartphone cameras will improve in 2022 LOOKING AHEAD WITH TECNO

December 17, 2021

LOOKING AHEAD WITH TECNO

Sensor shift stabilisation, new RGBW sensors, personalised AI algorithms, and more – here’s why your selfies and holiday photos are going to level up next year

Smartphone cameras are no longer just the most convenient option – they are quickly becoming the best one, beating traditional digital cameras with computational power and innovation.
In 2021, smartphones with multiple lens systems became mainstream. Improved sensor size and resolution mean users can capture more details and render images accurately in complex lighting conditions. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms enhanced many facets of image processing. And they’re not done. A slew of changes are coming in 2022, as smartphone manufacturers push the envelope.

What are the trends that will drive this change? At a recent webinar, Global Mobile Camera Trends 2022, organised by Counterpoint Research, experts from TECNO, Samsung, and DXOMARK Image Labs, discussed some of the key trends we are likely to see in the coming year – and what we will soon be holding in our hands

High-resolution sensors with pixel binning: Balancing resolution and light sensitivity
Presenting trends in camera resolution, Tarun Pathak, director of research, smartphone, Counterpoint Research, said about 40% of all smartphones in Q2 of 2021 had 48-64 megapixel (MP) sensors, and 3% of all smartphones had 108 MP sensors. According to Pathak, smartphones with 200 MP sensors are likely to launch in 2022.
Sensors with a high pixel count tend to capture more details from the scene. However, the size of pixels on such sensors is usually smaller. “The smaller the pixel, the less light you can capture in each pixel, and the harder it is to get a good image quality in darker environments,” said Pan Xuebao, VP and head of R&D, Samsung Electronics.
However, sensor manufacturers such as Samsung are deploying an algorithm-driven technique called pixel binning that enables high-resolution sensors (with a small pixel size) to perform better in low-light conditions. “Just like our human eye will dilate when we are in a darker environment to let in more light, similarly, in low light conditions, our algorithm will automatically put the sensor in high sensitivity mode,” Xuebao said. In this mode, the smaller individual pixels ‘combine’ and act like bigger pixels. This mode is turned off in brighter conditions.

Continuous optical zoom: Closer to the action
Phones are getting sleeker, but these aesthetics can be a technological challenge. This trend is presenting more of a challenge for manufacturers as they try to incorporate bulky telephoto lenses. Such technologies, such as periscope lenses which use innovative positioning to allow for 5x or 10x optical zoom, started appearing in smartphones during 2021.
The next step is to offer continuous optical zoom, which will allow users to shift between different focal lengths smoothly. This requires precise movement of lenses within small spaces without affecting image quality.
At the webinar, Hsu predicted the market could see continuous optical zoom in the second half of 2022, allowing users to shift between 3x to 5x optical zoom. Driven by advances such as long-stroke motor development and Active Optical Alignment, we could even see 3x to 10x zoom in 2023, he said.

RGBW Sensors: Let there be (more) light

Cat photos not up to the mark? It could be down to the lighting. Indoor environments have less than ideal light conditions. Yet, that’s where people usually take most of their photographs.

“[A solution to] low light is the holy grail of mobile photography,” said Hervé Macudzinski, image science director and product owner of DXOMARK Image Labs, which tests camera, audio, display and battery quality. “This is one [aspect] that can lead to disappointing quality. In low light, users capture portrait photos, pictures of family, pets and so on. So there is a lot of challenge in this use case.”
While smartphone manufacturers use differe

Localised algorithms: Using AI to personalise portraits
As cameras improve, we can see ourselves more clearly. New technologies allow our portraits to be more accurate, especially for people of colour.
While hardware enhancements are essential, smartphone software is playing a more significant role in determining the final image or video quality of these portraits. “We need to have very good processing – that is, to understand what the user’s intention was and modify the image adequately,” Macudzinski said.
That’s why some smartphone manufacturers use big data and deep neural networks to drive personalised and localised image processing. For instance, TECNO’s TAIVOS signal processing technology recognises and accurately reproduces dark skin elements. According to Hsu, the company uses a large dark skin database to “produce more than 6,120 Evaluation Scenarios spanning 115 countries”.
For portrait photography, the AI engine recognises and classifies different elements such as faces and hair colour to determine the subject's age, gender, and skin tone. The photo is then optimised for better clarity, colour, and light, which helps with more accurate reproduction of darker skin tones – even in low-light environments.

Scene, light, and colour enhancement: Behind every subject is a background
It’s not just the subject of a photo that matters – it's what’s behind them. Whether it’s the sun or a beautiful view, smartphone cameras are adapting to capturing these details better.
With traditional photography, professional photographers use their experience and training to make adjustments that highlight not just the subject but also background scene elements. They also typically spend significant time in post-production that brings images to life.
“Smartphone cameras need to provide all these capabilities in the default mode,” Macudzinski said. “That means the final smartphone user does not have to think through everything. They just have to press the button.”
That’s where AI-driven image processing comes in. According to Counterpoint Research’s whitepaper, AI is becoming advanced enough to recognise dynamic scene elements such as trees or sky in the background. Once identified, the image-processing system optimises their colour, contrast, and exposure.
AI will also help interpret light information. For instance, if a user is shooting against the sun, the algorithm works to underexpose the sun and brighten the subject. Smartphone manufacturers are also working on software-based solutions to correct distortions caused by wide-angle lenses.

Time of flight and dynamic vision sensors: Getting a sense of depth
Photos with sharply rendered foreground and blurred background can make for a pleasing effect – especially while shooting portraits. However, to do this, the smartphone must recognise depth and subject edges.
With Time of Flight (ToF) and Dynamic Vision Sensors (DVS) improving, smartphones will get better at generating 3D models of the scene and detecting edges. This will allow for more precise measurements and offer users features such as. enhanced and gradual blurring of backgrounds.
“ToF and DVS could be the opportunities where mobile phone cameras start to outperform (DSLR) cameras,” Hsu said.

A brighter, more intelligent 2022
These trends point to technology growing more intricate and catering to diverse use cases – whether that’s through personalised portrait rendition, stable imaging or allowing users to zoom in to the action.
However, the advancements will not be defined just by cutting-edge features on pricey smartphones. It’s a win across budget tiers - the developments result not just in technological advancement, but also trickle-down premium features to smartphones in the low and medium price bands. With the way smartphone cameras are levelling up, the best moments of your life will be remembered more clearly than ever.
Looking ahead with TECNO
Hosted by Counterpoint Research, Global Mobile Camera Trends 2022 Innovation Talk discussed new trends in imaging technology. TECNO aims to provide an excellent photography and videography experience through constant innovation and a deep understanding of consumer needs.

TV5 CAPS OFF LONGEST CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN WITH “ATIN ANG PASKONG ITO, THE 2021 TV5 CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION”

December 17, 2021

P1 Million and house & lot winner to be announced in the two-part TV Special

As a culmination of the longest Christmas campaign on Philippine TV, TV5 wraps up its four-month-long parade of presents with “Atin ang Paskong Ito, the 2021 TV Christmas Celebration” — a two-part TV special packed with joyful treats and spectacular performances from the country’s brightest stars. Airing on December 18 at 8:30 PM and December 19 at 8:00 PM, the TV5 Christmas Special encapsulates the network’s message of hope and unity, along with everything that makes this merry season so meaningful to Filipinos.

TV5 kicked off the BER-months this year with its ceremonial Christmas Tree Lighting, followed by a series of surprises for Kapatid viewers across the country, most notably the Himig ng Ating Pasko: Guess the Lyrics promo, which let viewers enjoy Christmas carols every day for a chance to win exciting prizes. Last month, the network successfully launched its inspiring Christmas Station ID, “Atin ang Paskong Ito, Kapatid,” enjoining Filipinos to celebrate this most-loved time of the year despite these challenging times.

For its upcoming two-part holiday special, TV5 celebrates the season with lots of singing and dancing, life-changing prizes and surprises, and the promise to continue uplifting the Filipino spirit in every home. Anchored on the theme “Ako, Ikaw, Tayo, hanggang sa pagtatapos ng selebrasyon!”, the Yuletide celebration spreads TV5’s 5 Pillars of Pag-asa, Kasiyahan, Kapatiran, Pagbabalik-tanaw, and Pasasalamat.

The spirit of Pag-asa rises above the difficulties endured by so many Filipinos — because when there’s hope, there’s happiness, which has always been at the heart of what TV5 does. For the ultimate Kasiyahan, TV5’s Christmas Special features outstanding production numbers by “Her Majasty” Maja Salvador, Popinoy winners Versus and Yara, the Lunch Out Loud crew, Sing-Galing team, Niña Niño cast, Zephanie, the Mandaluyong Children’s Choir, OPM icons Dulce, Rey Valera, Marco Sison, Radha, Hajji Alejandro, and more. The TV special is also presented by seasoned hosts Randy Santiago, K Brosas, Bayani Agbayani, Isabelle Daza, and co-hosts Zendee and MJ Marfori.

Another Filipino value that’s naturally in the DNA of TV5 is Kapatiran. For over a year now, this has been embodied by the network’s remarkable collaboration with a slew of artists and talents and unique partnership with different production companies, including ABS-CBN, all of whom were welcomed like family. For the very first time, both Kapamilya and Kapatid stars will share the stage for a Christmas number, led by no less than ASAP mainstays Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Ogie Alcasid, Martin Nievera, and Gary Valenciano to truly capture the magic of the holidays.

Taking stock of the challenging year of 2021, the TV5 Christmas Special also offers viewers a Pagbabalik-tanaw, as the momentous event marks the first-ever national TV tribute for the Philippines’ recent victories. Ms. Intercontinental Cinderella Faye Obenita and Miss Globe Maureen Montagne, with the special participation of Jose Mari Chan, will help recall how Filipinos, despite facing countless hardships, rose to new heights and garnered wins, both big and small.

As the network’s way of expressing their gratitude or Pasasalamat to its Kapatid viewers across the country, the winners of the Himig ng Ating Pasko: Guess the Lyrics promo will be announced during the Christmas Special. Three lucky winners will receive P100,000 each and the name chosen in the Grand Draw will bag the P1,000,000 jackpot prize and a house and lot from Camella.

End 2021 on a high note and experience the true essence of the one-of-a-kind Filipino Christmas with “Atin ang Paskong Ito, the 2021 TV5 Christmas Celebration” on December 18 and 19.
