Universal Records Philippines Forges Partnership with SHOW Korea To Further Strengthen The P-Pop Scene

December 02, 2022

Amid massive demand, popularity, and influence of Pinoy Pop or P-Pop right now in the landscape of the Philippine music scene, the home of the finest Original Pilipino Music (OPM), Universal Records Philippines along with SHOW Co., Ltd. have agreed to form a strategic partnership to further strengthen its hype and exposure here in the country.

It also aims to normalize giving the best possible talent and entertainment in today’s mainstream local and even international scenes, followers and supporters of P-Pop while contributing in promoting the one-of-kind Filipino culture and artistry as well.

Present at the contract signing ceremony were Universal Records Operations Manager Peter Chan, Managing Director Kathleen Dy-Go, along with ShowBT Korea, SHOW Korea, and SBTown Philippines CEO & President Geong Seong-Han, also known as Tatang Robin, with Ethan Yang, and Adie Hong.

It’s not a secret that Universal Records has been the major record label which can be called the pioneer in promoting and supporting the rise of K-Pop music here in the country since the mid-late 2000s. From selling CDs and spearheading shows, the label had been there and done that. And right now, it tries to remain at the forefront of innovative promotion of these kinds of music, as well as bridging the gap between different cultures.

UR’s Kathleen Dy-Go believes that there are a lot of talented individuals here in the Philippines who can be “idol material” and it is high time for these people to be exposed to high quality and intensive training, while acquiring the commendable discipline that Korean agencies instill in their trainees.

“It’s such a great honor for the label to acquire a partnership of this caliber. We promise that we’ll work very hard for the potential groups that we will be launching along with SHOW Korea and SBTown Philippines and of course, we have a lot of surprises in store for all of the P-Pop fans out there,” she says.

For the beloved Tatang Robin, it’s finally the right time for SHOW Korea, SBTown Philippines and UR to make this partnership happen so he approached the label first this time around. Both easily agreed to have an immediate meeting since both parties are interested and share the same vision.

“I want to express my gratitude to Universal Records because it did not take long for the label to agree to this amazing partnership. It was quick,” he shares.

As a great CEO himself, Tatang Robin has an exemplary experience in creating a really great boy group, evident in his dedication in training and debuting SB19, who's perhaps the most popular P-Pop group right now. So now it’s a new challenge for him to create an ultimate P-Pop girl group that will be idolized by many P-Pop and K-pop supporters. Although he’s nervous, he’s optimistic that SHOW Korea and SBTown Philippines can pull it off, of course, with the aid of UR.

He explains, “I believe that it’s the girls’ era this time around here in the Philippine market. As you all know, the most famous groups in South Korea right now are girl groups. It’s just very common here in this world that there’s really an order for everything. So, I think this time is already the right time for the girl groups to be at the top. I hope that this girl group that we’re going to debut is the first to be nominated internationally, like in Billboard.”

“If only fans give their love and support just like they did before in SB19, I believe that it’s also possible. Most of the talents we have, they have been training for up to four years. The shortest is one year and seven months. And as you all know I don’t debut talents who are not yet ready,” he adds.

Looks like the fans are in for a treat in the coming weeks and months because of this exciting partnership.

MERALCO reaffirms support for DOTr infra projects

December 02, 2022

DOTr Sec. Jaime J. Bautista (5th from left) and Meralco President and CEO Atty Ray C. Espinosa (5th from right) led officials DOTr and Meralco officials in a strategic meeting to advance the government’s infrastructure development efforts.

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) committed anew its support for the government’s transportation infrastructure development efforts crucial to the country’s pandemic recovery and economic growth.
In a meeting with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Meralco President and CEO Atty. Ray C. Espinosa affirmed the power distributor’s assistance through continuing pole relocation and energization activities in support of the agency’s ongoing and planned transportation projects geared towards greatly benefiting the public.

“As the country’s largest power distribution utility, Meralco is cognizant of the importance of stable and reliable electric service in the timely completion and effective operations of DOTr’s infrastructure projects. The government can always count on Meralco’s continued and full support for these initiatives which will help spur the Philippines’ post-pandemic recovery and renewed drive towards economic progress,” Atty. Espinosa said.

Among the new transportation projects requiring substantial power supply are the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Packages 2 and 3, North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) Extension from Calamba to Batangas; MRT-4; LRT-2 East Cogeo Extension; LRT-2 West Extension; LRT-6 Cavite Line A; MRT-7 Extension Project; EDSA Greenways; EDSA Bus Rapid Transit-Busway Concourse; Pasig River Expressway; Southern Access Link Expressway; and Northern Access Link.

Meralco is also currently undertaking a pole relocation project in support of the ongoing construction of NAIAxEDSA Tramo Connecting Ramp and Skyway Stage 4.

In May 2019, Meralco and DOTr signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) underscoring the parties’ close coordination for the timely completion of Common Station, LRT-1 Cavite Extension, MRT-7, Metro Manila Subway, PNR South Long Haul (from Manila to Sorsogon), and the three phases of North-South Commuter Railway System, namely PNR North 1 (from Tutuban to Malolos, Bulacan), PNR North 2 (from Malolos to Clark, Pampanga), and PNR South Commuter (from Solis to Calamba, Laguna).

Meralco and DOTr are likewise working together to ensure the timely grant of necessary permits and rights-ofway (ROW), clearances, access and authority for properties within their jurisdiction, in order for Meralco to fully implement the related relocation projects and to continuously operate its electrical facilities.

Since 2020, Meralco has relocated more than 2,500 poles and has energized 21 facilities to support the government’s infrastructure projects.

“We are grateful to Meralco for their renewed commitment to support our projects. Long before these projects become operational, Meralco has been and remains a loyal partner in supplying power critical for these projects to prosper,” DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista said.

LG Supports Young Technology Leaders With Disabilities Through 2022 Global IT Challenge

December 2, 2022

Attracting More Than 320 Participants From Around the World,
GITC Continues to Empower Youth With Disabilities for Eleventh Year

LG Electronics hosted the final round of the 11th Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities (GITC) last week. The two-day event saw inspiring, young participants from all over the world test their skills for computer-based activities in a series of timed challenges. Adopting a hybrid online and offline format, several key participating countries including Korea, Indonesia and Vietnam set up venues locally as well.

Following the success of the GITC’s preliminary round in August, registrations were high for the competition’s last stage. Ultimately, more than 320 participants from 16 countries were invited to join in the final round which was held online. After competing in four challenges – eTooleLifeMapeContent and eCreative – the young contestants gathered both in-person and online for an awards ceremony that acknowledged this year’s winners while also allowing everyone to come together and share experiences.

The eTool challenge tests entrants’ ability to make and edit presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint and utilize functions and formulae to calculate and organize data in Microsoft Excel. eLifeMap involves conducting advanced text and image searches online to solve daily problems, while eContent evaluates one’s capacity to create and edit videos dealing with a specific topic. Lastly, the eCreative challenge, which is divided into two sections, tasks participants with coding a self-driving car program (eCreative_SmartCar) and with developing an idea for technology to make life more convenient for persons with disabilities (eCreative_IoT).

LG Corporation, in conjunction with South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, has been leading the GITC since 2011. The program was established to help youth with disabilities by bridging the digital gap, enhancing their ability to utilize IT to improve their employment and higher education opportunities. Run by LG Electronics and the GITC Organizing Committee, and now in its eleventh year, the competition has attracted a total of around 4,000 young participants to date.

Using the GITC as a stepping stone for academic and professional pursuits, participants have continued to challenge themselves to accomplish their dreams after the competition. Faiza Pulri Adila from Indonesia, who won the all-around championship in the 2018 GITC, is studying nanotechnology engineering at Airlangga University in Indonesia. In addition, Cheenmanee Tnanapon from Thailand, the first person with developmental disabilities to win the all-round championship in the 2016 GITC, is taking the lead in raising disability awareness by appearing on popular Thai TV programs.

“I’ve worked very hard for many days with my friends for the competition because I thought this opportunity was perfect for me to keep pushing myself to improve my skills,” said Varinporn Thongjamnong, a 19-year-old from Thailand and winner of all-around championship in the 2022 Global IT Challenge. “I’m honored to be this year’s Global IT Winner, which I’m confident will motivate me to study even harder to achieve my dreams.”

“Technologies can help all of us to overcome obstacles in our daily lives and is something of a universal language that transcends borders, culture and many other differences,” said Kim In-kyu, chairman of the GITC Organizing Committee. “We hope that the wonderful young people who entered this year’s competition feel motivated and empowered to take on even greater challenges in the future.”

As highlighted in LG’s Better Life Plan 2030, the GITC is one of the company’s many initiatives in the key areas of accessibility and inclusion. LG is investing heavily in future generations as part of its comprehensive social contribution framework, and will continue to operate various events and programs specifically designed to assist and support the next generation of leaders by strengthening their skills and capabilities.

Pasko sa Bahay ni Juan: Habitat for Humanity Philippines launches Christmas campaign, inspires Filipinos to help build homes for every Juan

December 1, 2022

Philippines–This season of giving, Habitat for Humanity Philippines urges every Juan to celebrate a purposeful holiday and spark hope by helping build decent, affordable, and disaster-resilient homes and improving the lives of low-income Filipino families.

Launching its Christmas campaign called “Pasko sa Bahay ni Juan,” Habitat Philippines encourages Filipinos to start a tradition of giving back and help build resilient, sustainable communities by supporting programs for housing, community development, disaster response, hygiene promotion, and youth and volunteer engagement.

“Habitat Philippines has always believed that there’s strength in numbers to help build homes, communities, and hope. Through ‘Pasko sa Bahay ni Juan,’ we hope to become an avenue for each individual to begin a tradition of providing endless opportunities for less privileged families by helping build a decent home. Every Juan can start a ripple of impact. The spirit of giving back is strong during this time of the year, but the impact we can make and the hope we can give to a family in need of a decent home goes beyond the holiday season.  It all begins with everyone’s contribution and efforts. When we inspire more people to give, together, we can transform more lives,” said Habitat Philippines CEO Mardi Mapa-Suplido.

As part of its Christmas campaign, Habitat Philippines initiates partnerships with various corporations and establishments frequently visited by the public this holiday season. This includes corporations, malls, hotels, business process outsourcing agencies, and other companies with the goal to raise awareness of the housing need and encourage individuals to sign up as donors, helping less privileged Filipino families improve their access to safe, decent housing.

To make gift-giving more meaningful and extra-special, Habitat Philippines has also thoughtfully curated its annual Christmas catalog that features donation vouchers equivalent to materials that can help build a home, Christmas baskets for families, a ‘Gift of Hope’ Certificate in honor of a loved one, and gift items that will help improve the livelihood of homeowners in Habitat communities.

Habitat Philippines’ advocates and shelter champions Binibining Pilipinas International 2022 Nicole Borromeo and young entrepreneur Jardin Wong also show their support for the Pasko sa Bahay ni Juan Christmas campaign by sharing their own advocacies and experiences.

Borromeo, who joined volunteer activities in September to help repair homes at the Humanity Ville community in Calauan, Laguna, recalled her community immersion experience. “My experience going to Habitat’s community in Calauan, Laguna felt very fulfilling to me. I did not only get to help with gardening, improving the playground, and even upgrading the hall, but I also got to witness firsthand how the community came together because they saw the value of taking pride and care of the place they call home. I really learned the value of commitment. When people come together, especially for an incredible cause, we can create ripples of impact that can truly transform and uplift lives.”

Wong, who mobilized a donation of over Php2 million during his birthday for a cause on September 3, also encouraged the public to support the campaign. “The festivities of the Christmas season bring forth excitement and vigor that reverberates throughout the country. Filipino families have continuously celebrated this occasion by exemplifying the tradition of giving and charity. Habitat Philippines’ ‘Pasko sa Bahay ni Juan’ campaign celebrates this longstanding custom and expounds on the idea of a perfect gift - one anchored on the dream for every Filipino household to have access to safe and decent homes.”

Empowering families, mobilizing donors, volunteers for every Juan

A decent home provides safety and security for a family. For Charlito Rasonable, one of the 80 homeowners in the recently completed Paknaan Housing Project in Mandaue City, Cebu, having their own home has been his lifelong dream. Before the relocation, his family lived along the river in Subangdaku. As informal settlers, they experienced multiple demolitions and forced evictions, transferring from one inadequate house to another and fearing for their safety. So, when the Paknaan Housing Project came to fruition, Rasonable was overjoyed that he would finally have a decent home in a safe community – a treasure he could give his daughter.

“When you have a house like this, you have peace of mind. Even though I’m at work and my child is at home, I am relieved that she is safe and secure, unlike when we used to live in a danger zone. I would get anxious whenever I heard the fire truck’s siren from my workplace. I was worried about the fire because my daughter was alone. Here, I am assured that she’s safe,” said Rasonable, adding, “It is every parent’s dream to have a decent home for the family. I came from a difficult life with nothing, so I aspired and strived for it. This is it! My dream became possible!”

Rasonable is just one of over 150,000 families that Habitat Philippines has supported through its housing and community development programs, which the “Bahay ni Juan” campaign aims to sustain further. “Bahay ni Juan” is Habitat Philippines’ individual giving campaign launched in July. It recognizes the capacity of individual donors to contribute to the sustainability of its  Resilient, Inclusive, Sustainable, and Empowered (RISE) Communities Program, which uses a holistic, comprehensive approach to uplift the lives of Filipino families through decent housing.

Drawing inspiration from “Bahay ni Juan,” the Christmas campaign aims to engage more people to be part of the #JuanCrew – a community of givers that support, advocate, and contribute to helping build decent homes and sustainable communities for less privileged Filipino families.

To empower its current donors and encourage their network to create a lasting impact, Habitat Philippines will soon roll out a donor-incentive scheme that includes merchandise and referral rewards, among others, as tokens of appreciation for their contribution to the campaign. Donors will also get an opportunity to be part of volunteer engagement activities and immerse with the homeowners in Habitat communities.

Building a legacy through Bahay ni Juan

Inspired by Habitat Philippines’ call to build a legacy by helping provide a livable home for every Juan, architect and entrepreneur Charm de Leon pledged to support the Bahay ni Juan campaign and encouraged her followers to do the same. In her social media post, Charm explained to her supporters how to donate and what their donation could do to help build a home.

While grateful for their own home, Millennial Couple reminds their followers that not every Filipino has the privilege of having decent shelter. For their anniversary this year, Franchezka and Kenneth de Guzman also pledged to help fund the construction of homes for low-income families.

This holiday season, give the gift of hope and make a lasting impact. Be part of the #JuanCrew by helping build safe, decent homes for Filipino families. Donate to Habitat Philippines’ Bahay ni Juan campaign today: https://www.habitat.org.ph/bahaynijuan/

Maya accelerates 'digi-palengke' thrust in Mindanao BSP-DILG’s Paleng-QR Ph launched in Davao City today

November 27, 2022

Maya, the country's only all-in-one money app, is transforming Davao City's biggest Bankerohan Public Market with the launch of the Paleng-QR PH initiative in Mindanao today.
Spearheading the "digi-palengke" program is Davao City Government with the support of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG). Also supporting the launch are PLDT and Smart Communications.

BSP Governor Felipe Medalla and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte led the ceremonies held today at the city's Bankerohan Public Market.

"By promoting the interoperable QR PH national standard codes, Paleng-QR PH creates a simple but more powerful digital finance experience at the local community level. At Maya, we fully support Davao City's vision to build a stronger digital ecosystem," said Orlando Vea, Maya CEO and Founder and Maya Bank Co-Founder.
“Basta QR PH, pwede kami sa Maya,” Vea added.

The Paleng-QR Ph program aims to digitalize transactions starting with public markets and local transportation. The program enables vendors and tricycle drivers to accept digital payments from customers regardless of their e-wallet or bank accounts via QR Ph, the national standard for QR payment. Maya's QR codes are QR Ph-compliant, and its app can scan any QR Ph-powered transaction.

Creating digi-palengkes is part of Maya’s own LGUs Embracing and Accelerating Digitalization (L.E.A.D). Through this program, Maya equips local governments like Davao City with business-in-a-box payment acceptance solutions and disbursement tools to enable faster public service delivery.

Maya is the first digital financial services platform to adopt QR Ph. More than 52 million users can enjoy a seamless experience using Maya's consumer platforms that can send and accept P2P payments from other QR Ph-participating financial institutions.
Meanwhile, non-Maya users can pay at over 800,000 QR Ph-enabled Maya merchants, which are present in 96% of the total cities and municipalities.

The BSP's OR Ph initiative is part of the overall financial services transformation roadmap of the Philippines. It aims to raise Filipinos' trust in digital financial services, as consumers and enterprises will get used to sending and receiving cashless payments for everyday transactions.

Maya's full support to QR PH is in line with the BSP's thrust to increase the share of Filipino adults with a financial account from 56% in 2021 to 70% in 2023 and grow the volume of digital payments from 20% in 2021 to 50% by next year.

"Digital payment is the entry point of Filipinos to the financial system. As they build their financial footprint, consumers and MSMEs can access more progressive digital banking services offered by Maya," said Vea.

Maya has made it easier for consumers to spend, save, get credit, and invest in crypto just by using its top-rated all-in-one money app. Its merchant partners, meanwhile, can open a business deposit account and access revolving credit lines leveraging their payment transactions.

7 LESSONS ON PERSONAL FINANCE AND MANIFESTING DREAMS FROM CES DRILON AND FWD EXPERTS

November 25, 2022

Financial lessons carry more weight when they are from people who learned them the hard way—through struggle, years of hard work and persistence. During FWD Life Insurance’s Manifesters Roundtable FB livestream, hosted by Edric Mendoza, multimedia journalist and entrepreneur Ces Oreña-Drilon shared inspiring nuggets of wisdom that’ll help you build and manifest your dreams. With her were FWD leaders in various fields: Chief Agency Officer Jun Marasigan, Head of Investment Operations Michelle Lumabi, Senior Regional Sales Director Alvin Jade Rivano, Senior Area Sales Head Edison Brian Rivera, Area Sales Head Evalyn Oasan, and financial advisors Lester Reyes, Catherine Joy Go-Mendoza, and Joel Salazar.

Since she became an entrepreneur, Ces has been inspiring people to manifest their dreams, which they may have put on the backburner because of so many excuses. But what people don’t realize is they can already start and slowly build their dreams.

Ces Drilon, Edric Mendoza, and FWD Life Insurance experts shared nuggets of wisdom about investing and manifesting dreams.

We all know that working hard is one of the most important ingredients to manifesting one’s dreams, but there is so much more to the journey: personal reasons that range from family to being inspired by one’s parents (or children), and having the right mindset. Another vital ingredient that people don’t always consider is financial security. When you know you’re financially protected, you have the courage to live your dreams.

Here are our top 7 takeaways from the virtual roundtable discussion livestreamed on FWDPH Facebook Page

 1. Let the “why” and “who” of your dreams drive you, not just the “what.”
It’s not just about the “how” of success but also the “why.” Why do you work so hard? Most people work hard not just for themselves, but for their family to have a comfortable life, to finance their children’s education, to help take care of their aging parents, to be able to afford a bigger house, to enjoy life and not just let it pass you by. When you feel like giving up on these dreams, remind yourself why and for whom all your goals are.

 2. You don’t have to dream alone. Share your goals with loved ones.
“It’s very important to share your plans with your family,” Jun Marasigan said. “Next, you need to consult experts who know how you can achieve your goals. With my first insurance plan when I wasn’t in the industry yet, I consulted an expert on how I can financially prepare for the future because of what happened to my father, who passed away when I was young.”

Jun revealed that he comes from humble beginnings as his parents were from fishing and farming families. His dad died when Jun was only 22. “My father was the sole breadwinner of eight children; my mom was a housewife. I was so amazed that my father was insured. A family man with eight children was still able to think of protecting his life and his wife. To me, that’s love and responsibility. I was so inspired by that.”

Letting your family dream with you is one way to keep those very dreams alive. “Sometimes people give up when they feel they don’t have someone supporting them,” Lester Reyes added. “It’s important that aside from believing you can do it, others believe in you too. If your dream is to build a financially secure future, consult a trusted financial professional because we’ve already done this, we’ve studied this and can make recommendations on investing.”

 3. Learn from your mentors.
Even for Ces Drilon, who’s achieved so much in her broadcasting career, nothing came easy. As a fledgling reporter, she had to work hard to learn how to talk from the field, but she also had people that mentored her by example. “You follow people who have succeeded before you. For me, it was pioneers Tina Monzon-Palma and Cheche Lazaro.”

She added, “Success doesn’t come overnight. You have to work at it. Tiyaga. People think reporting is so glamorous, but a lot of time it’s spent waiting, researching.”

It’s no different in her second career as an entrepreneur. She continues to study how successful people who came before her managed to grow their business and their wealth. You may not have the same resources as your business idols, but you can try to emulate their habits and philosophy about money.

Don’t worry about how little you know about the ins and outs of financial planning right now. Treat your financial advisor as your mentor. Experts such as FWD’s financial advisors can help guide you on how you can manifest your dreams faster and more securely. They’re here for dreamers like you who have the burning desire to achieve goals but aren’t sure how to do it.

 4. Be patient.
Manifesting one’s dreams takes time, which requires patience. If you have the opportunity to focus on your dreams now, do it and count yourself lucky because not everyone can.

Ces is an example of that. For many years, she dreamt of spending more time on a farm but just couldn’t when she was still working for a TV station. During the pandemic, she grabbed the opportunity to not only enjoy farming and growing plants, but to actually turn it into a business. Ces invested her savings in her natural products brand Provenciana, enrolled in classes, and upgraded her skills. “This is really the road to success: you have to be patient.”

And as experienced by Ces, manifesting dreams also require that you’re able to protect and grow what you’ve started.

 5. Let the experts help you.
According to Michelle Lumabi, “maling akala” prevents most Filipinos from investing. “One of the most common misconceptions is that they need to shell out a big amount of money before they can start. There are platforms where you can start for as low as Php5,000. There are financial institutions like insurance or asset management houses that have easy payment terms.”

Michelle cited FWD Manifest as a unique investment-linked insurance plan for its four bonuses: the startup bonus, the premium extension bonus, the investment protection bonus, and the guaranteed milestone increase. Each bonus is credited to your main account so there is more capital to grow.

Michelle Lumabi shares, investment decisions must be made based on personal goals and not on what’s happening in the market.

6. Develop a positive mindset.
Anything we don’t know is scary—but it’s also an opportunity for growth and success. “Mindset is everything. Don’t be scared,” Jun said. “I started working at 20 and investing at 23. Every time I earned my salary, I spent 70%, saved 20% and gave 10% to charity. That’s been my practice ever since. When I had something more, I made a more sophisticated way of investing. There really is no substitute for discipline and hard work.”

A positive mindset can help you raise your self-expectations and that can be a powerful tool. “Failure for me was not an option,” said Ces, whose children are now her business partners. “We share goals and we’re quite disciplined. I’m very happy to be ordered around by my sons and proud that they have so much wisdom.”

 7. Focus on one goal at a time.
Dreaming is one thing, focusing to work on those dreams is quite another. Be single-minded in your pursuit to make your dreams a reality.  “Pursuing too many goals simultaneously may contribute to one’s failure,” said Alvin Jade Rivano. “Focus on one goal, dedicate yourself to it. Some experts even say be obsessed with it.”
