Up Close and Personal with Kuya Mark Lapid

June 5, 2026

Kuya Mark Lapid

Can you recall the iconic scene of Kuya Mark Lapid in his movie "Apoy sa Dibdib ng Samar" some twenty years ago? Where he ranted this line: "Oo, inaamin ko, saging lang kami. Pero maghanap ka ng puno sa buong Pilipinas, saging lang ang may puso! Saging lang ang may puso!"(Yes, I admit, we are just bananas. But look for any tree in the whole Philippines, only the banana tree has a heart! Only the banana has a heart!)

It was so popular before given that the social media wasn't that active yet but this particular scene jas inspired a lot of memes and according to Kuya Mark, some had even asked his permission to use it in their sitcoms and other projects.

In line of this, to help you refresh your memory or if you do not have any idea what I'm sayin' , here's a sample of what I did just recently...

Please click Here!

And I feel so privileged to have finally be up close and personal with Kuya Mark just recently. Getting to know him and having him shared all his hopes and dreams for our beloved country, his positive outlook in life, his cheerful vibe, so natural not pretentious... He was just like a regular, funny but full of great knowledge "Kuya." And another thing, he's so approachable, you wouldn't feel any hesitations for him. Very open, amiable and in Filipino term... "Walang masamang tinapay (there is no such thing as bad bread)."

Here are some of the videos recorded during our conversations with Kuya Mark:

The overall experience meeting him and up close and really personal with him was superb, outrageous and very memorable for me. How could a dignified, well-respected and high achiever person like him stay so very grounded. No wonder her beautiful wife, Tanya Garcia and their three daughters are living a low-profile, peaceful and happy life with him.

Kudos to Sen. Lito Lapid for raising Kuya Mark and his siblings properly and very well.

Until our next "chika-chika," Kuya Mark! By the way thank you also for the sumptuous feast! God bless you and your family.

This is me with Kuya Mark

Make your child's education secured

Philam Life's District Manager, Eric Nicdao during the actual talk

They say that the best education anyone can have starts at home. It is where the basic foundation of every individual begins. And us, as parents plays a vital role to our child's welfare and future.

If we talk about the future of our children, our first priority is always their education. Whether what kind of teaching methods or system, still, our primary concern for them is to have an education that will not only fit our budget but to their convenience as well.

We only want what's best for them, and part of fanily planning is also early planning for our kids' future.
Just recently, Philam Life has partnered with Ms. Joy Mendoza, founder of HAPI, Homeschooling Association of the Philippines Islands and had Mr. Nicdao as one of the honorable guest speakers. From there, a lot of ideas and insights have been gathered and shared. It was a very unforgettable learning experience for me.

Mr. Eric Nicdao with Edric and Joy Mendoza

The main spirit of the sixth annual Philippine Homeschool Conference Expo (PHC) held at the
SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier in Taguig City. With this year’s theme “From roots to wings”,
PHC hopes to nourish the firm foundation that they have with parents by continuing to equip them with
knowledge and virtues that would help them soar together. The event, led by the Homeschooling Association of the Philippine Islands (HAPI) gathered some of the country’s experts on homeschooling to share their insights on the importance and implications of homeschooling.

Among them was Eric Nicdao, District Manager of Philam Life. Nicdao explained that while there are
distinct advantages to homeschooling, it is never without a challenge. “The cost of education for homeschooling a child is not inexpensive as others perceive it to be”, said Mr. Nicdao. He further
explained that this is because homeschooling entails the presence of one of the parents at home which
will potentially reduce the family’s overall income. With the increasing costs of college education, it will be
very daunting to have only one breadwinner. Mr. Nicdao also shared why it is important to plan early for
the child’s education.

“As a parent myself, I understand the real-life struggles that parents go through to give the best to their
children. It is, therefore, wise and even necessary to invest in a plan with guaranteed education benefits
even if school-going children are still quite young. Plans like this should have the potential to grow to cope
adequately with annual tuition fee hikes.” Nicdao added. “More to the point, a parent and a child should
not have to guess what the future brings. There are too many uncertainties already and having something secure and reliable allows a family to focus on learning and academic excellence rather than trying to make sure that there is a school they can afford.”

Philam Life Booth

To help address these concerns, Philam Life launched a new education product, Future Scholar.
Future Scholar offers guaranteed education benefits and long term growth potential through access to
expertly-managed funds. The plan will continue without the need to pay future payments should the payor
pass away or suffer total and permanent disability.

There’s Play to Learn at Hope Christian High School‘s Pre-School Program

We tend to think of pre-school education as nothing more than supervised play, but  pre-school education has lasting effects. According to research done by W. Steven Barnett, Ph.D. at the National Institute for Early Education Research Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in  2008: “Well-designed preschool education programs produce long-term improvements in school success, including higher achievement test scores, lower rates of grade repetition and special education, and higher educational attainment.”

At Hope Christian High School’s Preschool, it’s more accurate to call it intelligent play.  Children learn cognitive skills and concepts through play activities.  Young children develop their big muscles and gross motor skills through indoor and outdoor play. Play experiences also allow children to learn cooperative play, sharing, taking turns, and to follow rules and instructions among others. Math and Science concepts are learned through manipulative materials, self-discovery and exploration of their environment.

Educational Field Trips are also part of the curriculum and expose the children to learning and discovery outside the classroom. For example, children get to experience life at a farm and see farm animals up close.  Preschool programs should be designed to develop all aspects of a child’s social and emotional development.

Hope Christian High School’s Pre-School puts a strong emphasis on Christian values and follows an international curriculum. They have seven learning centers that use both English and Chinese instruction. They keep the teacher-student ratio small to be able to attend to the needs of individual students. The school boasts of fully air-conditioned classrooms and facilities, an outdoor playground and an indoor playroom, a gymnasium, and a daycare program.

Apart from acquiring the basic skills in reading, writing and arithmetic, the school believes it is never too early to teach values of love and respect for one’s parents, respect for the feelings of others, and to develop healthy habits.

The foundation of a good education starts with play.
