TikTok Provides Its Community with Access to Credible COVID-19 Resources and Information

July 10, 2021

• TikTok remains committed to combatting medical misinformation
• TikTok provides only trustworthy resources and accurate public health information regarding COVID-19 on the platform.

One of the ways that TikTok helps its community stay safe and informed during the pandemic is by ensuring that it provides the right public information and resources on the platform. Likewise, through partnerships with government institutions, such as the Department of Health, TikTok can assist in sharing credible information that will help keep the public well-informed.

According to Kristoffer Rada, TikTok Head for Public Policy, "TikTok is taking a proactive and holistic approach to countering misinformation on the platform. We have teamed up with experts across the industry, civil society, and public health, along with our own Content Advisory Council, in order to develop adequate policies, enforce strategies, and be able to stay ahead of rapidly evolving content. The current partnership we have with the DOH reinforces this commitment. As part of the Check The FAQs campaign we actively remove misleading or false COVID-19 information. Through our creators and medical professionals on the platform we also help promote accurate information that would help Filipinos make an informed choice about getting vaccinated."

Dr. Beverly C. Ho, MPH, DOH Director for Health Promotion, says, "Parallel to our COVID-19 Vaccination campaign RESBAKUNA: Kasangga ng BIDA, TikTok, along with all the Filipino health creators, have been our allies in the battle against vaccine misinformation and hesitancy during this pandemic. The Health Promotion Bureau recognizes the potential this partnership holds in increasing vaccine confidence, easing the apprehensions of the people, and in forwarding correct information to a wider audience." She adds, "HPB is thankful that the Check The FAQs campaign has put various equally entertaining and informative content in the limelight. We look forward to more of these engaging materials as we continue to get more Filipinos vaccinated. Sama-sama tayong lahat sa #BIDABakunation!"

TikTok’s Community Guidelines are designed to help combat medical misinformation on the platform by prohibiting users from posting false or misleading content, particularly in relation to COVID-19. This includes misinformation regarding vaccines, anti-vaccine disinformation, and paid advertising that promotes against vaccination. The TikTok platform also houses a dedicated Check The FAQs banner that sits on the discover page, which connects users to credible Covid-19 information as well as creative videos, not only from our creators but also from healthcare professionals.

Call-to-action type content related to COVID-19 vaccines are only accepted on a case-to-case basis, provided that they are in the interest of public health and safety. Through specially trained teams, false or misleading content, along with accounts that spread misinformation, are identified and removed from TikTok. Community members are also encouraged to report misinformation and any content that violates TikTok's Community Guidelines. With the help of industry-leading threat detection platforms, suspicious networks and activities are also identified and flagged within the app as well. Any Covid-19 content shared on TikTok is carefully screened for accuracy, with the help of fact-checking partners, which includes Agence France-Presse (AFP). The DOH itself reviews all the vaccination-related videos shared on TikTok's Covid-19 mainpage, and approves the ones that contain the right information about the vaccines.

Only content that contains verified facts are widely distributed into users' For You feeds, helping minimize the potential spread of false information within the app. Anti-vaccine and Covid-19 misinformation will not be recommended to users and will carry a banner that warns viewers of misinformation. TikTok removes false content, and redirects searches related to COVID-19 or vaccine disinformation to the app's Community Guidelines. Also, anti-vaccine hashtags are not completed in search. TikTok users who explore coronavirus-associated hashtags will see an in-app notice, which provides direct access to credible sources, including the World Health Organization (WHO) website, as well as local public health agencies.

Celebrating kindness on TikTok

June 15, 2021

People around the world come to TikTok to be entertained and to express themselves creatively. The immense diversity of people and content on our platform is what makes TikTok such a special place – from people outlining the sources of their unique qualities through the mosaic trend to sharing their customs and traditional food with #culturechallenge. Last year, TikTok celebrated the creators, diversity, community and culture on the platform that brought positivity and joy to life through the  #ItStartsOnTikTok campaign. We are driven by our passion to maintain a welcoming environment for our global community, and over the last year we’ve introduced a range of features aimed at fostering kindness and preventing bullying.

Today we're taking another step with the launch of #CreateKindness, a global campaign and a creative video series aimed at raising awareness around online bullying and how we can all choose kindness.

Promoting awareness around bullying
At TikTok, we value the trust of our community and work hard to maintain it by cultivating an inclusive atmosphere. Bullying behavior damages the trust-based nature of the app by harming people's confidence in themselves. We're mindful that although in-app interactions may seem harmless to some, the impact of people's online experiences don't always disappear when they close the app. This is why we greatly value the stories from our community about their experiences and why we invest in measures to help TikTok remain a place where kindness and compassion thrive.

As part of our ongoing commitment to promote online kindness, we're launching on our @TikTokTips account an animated video series that tells the real and personal stories of six creator-animators whose distinct animation styles complements their diverse experiences.

Through their videos, these talented creators offer perspectives on how to counter bullying, show the unintended impact this harmful behavior can have, and remind us why it's important that we work together to prevent it.

• In "Block the Bullies" @milkymichii shows how to deal with unkind Duets.
• Through the introspective "Why Would You..." @recokh illuminates how his insecurities are behind the desire to be unkind to others and how to navigate these feelings.
• With "I Want to Hold On To" @kellyemmrich shares how to overcome negative comments by focusing on the communities that celebrate her.
• In "Walk Away" @amyrightmeow gives advice on how they deal with people intentionally misrepresenting their thoughts.
• In "Power of Words" @rosie.gif explores the impact that micro-aggressions can have and implores people to think before they post.
• Through "What We Don't See" @king.science encourages people to treat one another with care and compassion.

By using their distinctive animation styles and voices, and revealing themselves at the end of the videos, these creators drive home an important message: behind every account is a real human being who deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.

Spreading kindness on TikTok
TikTok communities thrive when kindness and care are at the forefront. Videos using hashtags related to kindness, including #love, #kindness have garnered over 400 billion views and generated almost 50 billion video creations around the world.

Heart stickers and creative effects are also among the most popular product features used on TikTok to celebrate kindness. These have been added to over 2 billion videos globally in the past year, with our communities in the US, Philippines, Indonesia, Brazil, and Mexico using them the most.

Fostering kindness on TikTok
We're committed to promoting well-being and positive online behavior as we strive to make meaningful and enjoyable experiences possible for everyone. This includes working to remove content and accounts associated with harassment and bullying. Bullying is not tolerated on TikTok, and we work to combat it through our policies, features, and partners as we continue to champion comprehensive approaches to online safety.

In addition to these videos, we invite our community to participate in the #CreateKindness hashtag challenge by creating TikTok videos that share the heart-warming moments and comments that inspire you to spread kindness.

Through this campaign, we invite our community to choose, celebrate, and create kindness with one another, every day.

Moving Together for Mental Health in the Digital Age

October 10, 2020

Mental health remains one of the most neglected areas of public health globally. According to the World Health Organization , close to 1 billion people are living with a mental disorder yet countries on average spend a mere 2% of their health budgets on mental health, leaving many without access to quality mental health services. In  the Philippines, the Department of Health urges the public to access free mental health e-learning course.

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, and provides an opportunity for the world to come together to address the challenges around mental health. This year, World Health Organization (WHO), the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) and United for Global Mental Health (UnitedGMH) have joined forces to spark conversations on how the global community can work together through the Move for mental health: let’s invest campaign. The campaign highlights how the COVID-19 pandemic and the implications, including social distancing measures and economic downturns are fuelling fear and anxiety that have further impacted people’s mental health.

Another implication is the surge in the number of hours people spend online for work, entertainment and staying updated while remaining at home. The excessive time spent online has led to a new set of challenges, such as screen-time addiction and cyber bullying that have made it more important than ever to ensure a positive and balanced online environment. Along with the government and individuals, digital platforms play a big part to help users forge mental and digital resilience.
How digital platforms can be harnessed to promote mental health

From sharing mental health tips to personal struggles, digital platforms can play a critical role in raising awareness and educating users about mental health. TikTok for instance, launched the #thinkb4youdo challenge to encourage users in the Philippines and across the world to take a moment and consider, before partaking in negative behaviour or even dangerous acts online - from cyber bullying to self-harm. Such campaigns are becoming a call to action for the online community to play their part in creating a safe and positive environment for everyone.

With the time we spend online today, more people are becoming aware that maintaining digital wellness is important and they are leveraging digital platforms to raise such awareness. Case in point, medical intern and TikTok creator Kilimanguru addresses mental health in one of his videos captioning: “Mental health matters. STOP THE STIGMA.”

However, digital platforms have a role that goes beyond just facilitating content sharing. There is also a need to ensure that a safe place is created on the platform for people to discover, create and connect. TikTok has rolled out more robust features over the years, such as Screen Time Management and Restricted Mode, and users are empowered to take more control over how much time they want to spend on TikTok and limit the appearance of content that may not be appropriate for them.
Make a personal commitment for a better mental health
Bringing up mental health challenges is a unique journey for everyone, but people should feel empowered to lead by example and share their battles with others to encourage them to get help. With digital platforms, we have actually seen a rise in people sharing their stories as a way to empower others. Each of us are responsible for our own mental wellbeing and there are practical ways that we as individuals can take to look after our mental health in the digital age, including:
Reduce time online - We can take a proactive approach to limit the time we spend online by turning off our digital devices at certain times of the day such as when you are sleeping or spending time with our loved ones. We can also disable unnecessary notifications as often it is hard to resist looking at the constant buzzing of new messages even when we are about to go to sleep. There are various measures in place today that help us to control how much time we spend online and we should be making use of these measures actively.

Change your focus - Many of us turn to devices like our phone purely as a force of habit to mindlessly kill time. But are you escaping into the digital world as a substitute for real life? Turning to apps like social media and forums may be easy and convenient, but there are often healthier, more effective ways to pass time. If you are feeling bored, consider exercising or taking up a new hobby. The takeaway is striking a balance between online and offline interactions and recognising that we do not have to be glued to our screens 24/7.
Take time for reflection away from the screen - It is very important to have introspective time away from our digital devices and practicing mindfulness. Try journaling or meditating. Keep track of all the great memories and positives — and practice gratitude for all the people and things you have in your life.

While the above is by no means an exhaustive list, the key here is to make a commitment to prioritize our mental health. It is about taking the first step to understand what we can do as individuals and to act on it so that it is not just something that we talk about.
It takes a community to address mental health

Raising mental health awareness and eradicating stigma around the topic requires a whole-of-society approach. While each one of us can take concrete actions in maintaining our own mental health, we can also play a role in supporting friends and family who are struggling. Employers for example can take active steps to create employee wellness programs that can help to build a nurturing environment for their organizations.

Governments are increasingly committing to improving mental health services and making them accessible for all. They can also collaborate more closely with the private sectors and communities to understand the current needs and build relevant solutions to address current gaps. The private and public sectors will need to collaborate more closely than ever before to raise awareness on this crucial issue. Public-private partnerships and programs can help support efforts to raise awareness about mental health.

This digital day and age has certainly brought about many new challenges, and it is absolutely crucial that digital platforms do their part to help users forge mental and digital resilience. However, the responsibility of promoting mental health does not fall on one person, party or organization. It requires a united approach and everyone can do their part to improve mental health and help others suffering from mental illnesses to expunge the stigma of mental health.
