Home Foodie: Morning show for the certified foodies

Home Foodie: GMA's newest daily cooking show

Yup! You've read it right! There;s a new morning show that caters to all certified foodies! Let's admit it peeps, what could be the best thing that would attract and make us feel engrossed? It is FOOD, right? There are a lot of good effects that come when when it is being prepared, when it is being cooked, when it is set on the table and of course when it is being excitedly eaten and shared with your family and friends.

This is the yummy-goodness food prepared by the San Miguel Pure Foods culinary experts during "Home Foodie" blogcon. Hmmm... so tempting, right?!

It all boils down to one statement that, "Good food means great company."  Yes, that's what "Home Foodie" is all about. For all the homemakers, food addicts, cooks, food-lovers, housewives and even husbands, house-helpers and food fanatics, this show is dedicated just for you.

Drew Arellano, would be hosting the show and I'm definite that he's so fit for this since he has wide mass appeal, non-alienating and is a true blue foodie. He can also inspire and encourage men to enjoy food by spending time in his kitchen.

Cooking experts from San Miguel Pure Foods Culinary Center, led by chefs Llena Tan-Arcenas, Rene Ruz and RJ Garcia will delight us with their food preps and will share us new twists, tips and techniques. San Miguel Pure Foods believes that aside from dining out, foodies should come home and harness their passion for food by cooking in their own kitchens and creating their own food experience.

The "Home Foodie" blogcon was a fun, fun, informative and food-overload event. As soon as we arrived at the venue, we were so amazed by the set-up. Take a look at this one.

These healthy herbs like rosemary and Sweet Basil that's so useful in cooking were on top of every table in the venue. Well, I got the sweet basil since I love to cook Pesto Pasta. ;))

Aside from those herbs, which I truly appreciate, food, food and more food were set at the counters. The culinary experts used San Miguel Pure Foods products.

Shepherd's Pie

Chicken Adobo Rice with Kangkong, Bagoong and Mango toppings. A real treat!

Macaroni Salad

Tempting Breaded Fried Chicken

Don't be deceived by this one, at first it looked like just an ordinary roll of bread but it has a buttery taste that perfectly blended with the bread itself, like it much!

Kampto at Sigarilyas

This is a very surprising meal for me. I am not fond of the Sigarilyas veggie, actually. But after savoring on this dish, I've come to like it already :)) The beef kampto is so tasty and tender and mind you, they've used Magnolia All Purpose Cream for this instead of the coconut milk or cream. This one, I'm gonna try and cook for my family.

Dayap Cheesecake for dessert

Fruits

Of course, since this is a cooking show, we wouldn't get away without witnessing a live cooking demo. Chef RJ Garcia demonstrated on how to cook the Chicken Adobo Rice, one of Filipino's comfort foods.

Chef RJ garcia pouring the Sexy Chix on the pan

The end product! Chicken Adobo Rice topped with Kangkong, Bagoong and Mango slices! Love it!

Truly, Home Foodie dishes are "masarap, masustansya at kayang-kaya."

Daily food intake may pose serious oral health problems—expert says

You heard how your daily food intake may affect your health. From obesity to various chronic diseases, your diet may take a toll at your overall wellness—and also your oral health. Maintaining a balanced diet is essential to healthy living, but indulging in foods rich in sugar will make you a candidate for tooth decay and gum disease. According to Carmie de Leon, vice president for sales and marketing of Healthway Medical, sweet-toothed Filipinos should be aware that they not only increase their chances of acquiring type 1 or type 2 diabetes whenever they reach for a rich, chocolatey dessert or carbonated drinks. “What they don’t realize is that, when they expose their teeth to too much sugary foods from sugar-filled sodas, sweetened fruit drinks, or high-in-sugar desserts, they are giving permission to cavities to attack their teeth,” de Leon said.
She added, “By eating foods rich in sugar content, they tend to invite more cavities, which cause the formation of plaque and eventually, tooth decay. But sugary foods are not the only culprit for teeth erosion. Even those rich in starch may contribute to tooth decay. In some instances, it may also cause periodontitis.”

Periodontitis, a severe gum disease, destroys the soft tissue and bone that serves as the backbone of your teeth. When left untreated, this serious infection could cause the gums to loosen the hold of the teeth, causing them to fall out.

“People who are most prone to periodontitis are those who have been diagnosed with diabetes since diabetes decreases the ability to resist infection and slows the healing process,” de Leon said. “If a person has this serious oral health condition, their blood sugar levels tend to rise, making diabetes more difficult to manage.” Since food that contain sugars of any kind affects not only the oral health but the overall wellness of a person, Healthway Medical—the most trusted and preferred mall-based clinic in the Philippines—highlights the importance of proper nutrition to ensure that physical and emotional health are always in its best condition. “You may be able to prevent two of the most common oral health conditions (tooth decay and periodontal disease) simply by improving your diet,” de Leon said. “But the challenging part comes in the choosing process, the moment when you’re locked up choosing which food groups are best for you,” de Leon said.

The Nutrition month comes with a full plate of health and wellness recommendations, but de Leon said that the first big step will start from the kitchen. “If you want to achieve optimum wellness from head to toe, you’ll need to check your fridge and swap your junk with foods that are actually good for you.” De Leon said, “As for your oral health, you’ll need to practice good oral hygiene every day.”
Brushing alone won’t keep bacteria at bay. To give your mouth the holistic dental care, you need to floss daily, maintain a balanced diet, replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if bristles are already frayed, and consult your dentist regularly.

To help you address your dental health concerns, Healthway Medical ensures that every Filipino has control over his or her dental health by offering a wide-array of dental services. “To win a confident smile, you’ll need to give regular attention to your mouth,” de Leon said. “It’s easy to smile painlessly throughout the day if you have the right attitude towards improving your overall wellness.

For an optimum health security, you need to make sleeping, eating right, exercising, and de-stressing (S.E.E.D.) as part of your daily routine.” De Leon concluded, “Every person needs a confidence-boosting teeth. In order to achieve this, you’ll need to give your teeth the right care it needs through good nutrition and unparalleled quality dental service.” If you want to achieve a great-looking set of teeth, visit any Healthway Medical clinics at the Alabang Town Center, EdsaShangri-la, Market! Market!, Festival Mall, Healthway Manila, SM The Block and Greenbelt 5.

Photo shows (L-R) SM Supermalls President Annie Garcia, SM VP Bien Mateo, US Ambassador Philip Goldberg, and United Architects of the Philippines’ Committee on Accessibility Chair, Arch. Jaime Silva during the event.

Just days after the culmination of the Philippine National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, the U.S. Embassy held a forum to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) act. The forum, entitled “PWD Rights: Diversity and Social Inclusion”, served as an avenue for inclusive dialogue between PWD advocacy groups and various stakholders like the academe, the government, and private companies.

Distinguished members of the panel included Senator Sonny Angara, Honorable US Ambassador Philip Goldberg, National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) Executive Director Carmen Zubiaga, Executive Vice President and CEO of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan (TWH) Joy Cevallos-Garcia, Be-medaled Paralympian Powerlifter Adeline Dumapong, and SM Vice President for Operations and Program Director of Disability Affairs Bien Mateo.

US Ambassador Goldberg expressed his gratitude to all the stakeholders present during the forum, with special mention to SM, which according to him has done so much in the area of disability affairs.

SM VP Mateo affirmed during his talk that SM is strongly advocating for PWD inclusion and that several programs under SM Cares underscore this advocacy. Some of the projects he mentioned were the Angels Walk for Autism, the Happy Walk for Down Syndrome, the earthquake resilience briefing for Senior Citizens and PWDs, and the SM Supermalls’ special screening of audio descriptive movies for the blind and the deaf.

The forum concluded with the agreement that providing equal opportunities and helping PWDs to become active and contributing members of the community are necessary in creating a caring, nurturing, and more sustainable society.

A Thousand Stories of Joy: Mondelez Philippines Concludes Year 2 of Joy Schools Program

Ranzelle’s story is also the subject of a short movie available on Mondelez Philippines’ website. It shows how Ranzelle developed from a shy and withdrawn child to one who participates in class, through the help of a 9-month daily lunch feeding provided by Mondelez Philippines’ Joy Schools program.

Her name is Ranzelle Ann Sombrero and this is her story of joy. Ranzelle, residing in Tacloban was one of the hundreds of thousands of children greatly affected by Typhoon Yolanda. Perhaps due to the trauma she experienced or perhaps this was how life was for her but Ranzelle was a quiet girl, hardly participating in school activities and always absent due to various illnesses. Thankfully there was someone looking out for her, someone who thought she deserved to experience joy in her young life.

That someone was her Teacher Villa P. Nacilla of Panalaron Central Elementary School in Tacloban. In June 2014 the school became one of the adopted Joy Schools of Mondelez Philippines. Seeing Ranzelle’s undernourished condition, Teacher Nacilla made sure that Ranzelle would be part of Mondelez Philippines’ daily feeding through the Joy Schools program.

“Wala po kasi akong makain minsan sa bahay dahil hindi nakakapaghanda si Lola. Ang nanay ko naman po nasa Maynila. Hindi ko po alam kung nasaan si Tatay,” goes Ranzelle’s story.

Turns out, those daily meals helped do wonders for Ranzelle. The daily rice, viand, fruit and snack she received for nine months helped make up for what she lacked at home. Ranzelle began to be active in class, always reciting, always raising her hand to answer teachers’ questions. Coming to school was exciting; not only because of the full meal she would receive but because of the energy she now had to learn and develop.

In March of this year, Ranzelle not only passed the 4th Grade, she also achieved the 1st Honor rank in her class. Her nutrition has improved and she now even enjoys her school’s playground. Ranzelle is living proof of how with a little joy, great things can happen for the future leaders of the country.

Ranzelle, energized every school day and present in class was even able to achieve 1st Honors at the end of her 4th Grade, less than 2 years after Typhoon Yolanda devastated her hometown of Tacloban.

Bringing Joy, Creating the Future. Launched in 2013 during Mondelez Philippines’ 50th year in the country, the Joy Schools program aims to help create joyful centers of learning through interventions for nutrition, teacher training and facilities improvement. Unique in its own right, the Joy Schools aims to help turn sadness into joy for three of the most pressing problems of public elementary schools today.

Now celebrating its 52nd anniversary, the Company formerly named Kraft Foods has seen more than a thousand stories of joy created through the help of its 9-month daily feeding program for undernourished students, urban gardening seminar for schools and parents, teacher values formation and skills training, and facilities improvement to create a conducive and joyful learning environment. All these the Company was able to achieve through the support of its partner, the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

The Results of Joy. In March of this year, 85% of its 1,064 feeding beneficiaries achieved normal nutritional status, from being undernourished. Feeding programs are great motivators for attendance as such 90% of these students became present everyday during the last school year. Furthermore, their constant attendance ensured they achieved and maintained above passing grades for the whole year.

The story of Ryzza was made the subject of a short movie available on Mondelez Philippines’ website. In the video, you'll see that it depicts how Ryzza was instructed by Teacher Atregenio to read with the help of a Remedial Reading seminar she attended, made possible by Mondelez Philippines’ Joy Schools program.

It wasn’t just the students who experienced joy either. Teachers received exclusive training from the Ateneo Center for Educational Development and the Learning Library. Parents received training from East West Seed Foundation and supplies to start their own gardens and grow their own vegetables. Also, schools received books and sports and play equipment for their students’ enjoyment. Truly, joy was felt by everyone.

Joy You can Take with You, Always. Lady Ryzza Sanchez, now a Grade 3 student of Joy School Padre Zamora Elementary in Pasay has her own story of joy. Her story starts with as much sadness for Ryzza was a concern for her teachers for being noisy, disruptive and talkative in class. Teachers’ patience was tested, including that of Teacher Lailane B. Atregenio.

“Ryzza, bakit ka hindi nakikinig sa klase?” was Teacher Atregenio’s question.

“Teacher, hindi po ako marunong magbasa.”

These were the five words in Ryzza’s story that would help result to great joy in her life. It was through the learning from the Remedial Reading seminar Teacher Atregenio attended and the help of the new remedial reading corner, both provided by Mondelez Philippines that Ryzza began to learn to read. Excited, Ryzza would read even at night, memorizing the words and letters she copied that day in her notebook. She started with words, and eventually moved to books like her favorite “Si Daginding.”

As Ryzza began to read, she also began to gain self-confidence. Now a transformed book lover, Ryzza isn’t part of the remedial reading class anymore but she drops by from time to time to learn some more and create more joy for herself.

Now, Ryzza is able to read and even has a favorite book.

The stories of Ranzelle and Ryzza tell us that joy cannot be donated or given. It is created together, through partnership and concern for each other.

“Two years into our Joy Schools program we have seen that the true joy comes from the passion and dedication of our partners, teachers, principals and parents,” shares Maria Cindy C. Lim, Head of Corporate Affairs of Mondelez Philippines. “Together, we are able to help the students create joy for themselves, to write and weave these stories of joy that hopefully they will remember forever. We’ve helped create more than a thousand stories so far, and we’re eager to help write a thousand more as we continue our program this year.”

For more information on the Joy Schools program, visit http://ph.mondelezinternational.com/well-being/community-partnerships and watch the stories of Ryzza and Ranzelle. Mondelez Philippines is celebrating 52 years in the Philippines.
