Never miss this phenomenal film, "Uninvited," with three of the great actors in different generations

November 24, 2024

It was the grandest media presentation of one of the official entries to the 50th MMFF (Metro Manila Film Festival) that I've covered. Real fitting enough to showcase such great actors of three different generations... the "Star for All Seasons," Vilma Santos, the "King of Philippine Romance Drama," & the original "Philippine Heartthrob," no other than Aga Muhlach and the "Multimedia Star," & multi-awarded actress Nadine Lustre... all three in one scintillating, thrilling, suspenseful movie, the "Uninvited."

The cast of "Uninvited" during the grand media presscon held at the Solaire Resort North

They are being supported by an impressive lineup that includes RK Bagatsing, Mylene Dizon, Lotlot de Leon, Gabby Padilla, Elijah Canlas, Ketchup Eusebio, Gio Alvarez, Cholo Barretto, Ron Angeles, and Tirso Cruz III.
From Mentorque Productions—the makers of the most-awarded Filipino horror movie of all time, Mallari—comes a remarkable cinematic milestone Filipino audiences can't afford to miss. Adding even more prestige, the film is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which also helped catapult last year’s MMFF to success. Joining the team is Project 8 Projects in their first collaboration with Mentorque.

"Hindi Lang 'To Basta Party!"
The tagline “Hindi lang ’to basta party!” (“This is no ordinary party!”) teases the gripping mystery at the heart of Uninvited. What are the real stories and secrets behind the characters, and how are they connected?
Directed by Dan Villegas in his comeback directorial film after six years, Uninvited showcases an unforgettable collaboration of some of the most celebrated actors in Philippine cinema, with a screenplay written by Dodo Dayao.

Official Synopsis
Eva Candelaria (Vilma Santos) has been waiting for this day for the last ten years—the birthday party of Guilly Vega (Aga Muhlach), the billionaire who brutally murdered her only daughter a decade ago and escaped justice.

Disguised as a socialite, Eva attends the opulent event with a single goal: revenge. As the night unfolds, she carefully stalks each person involved in her daughter’s murder, inching closer to her ultimate target. But who is the true villain of her story? Is it Guilly or his daughter Nicole (Nadine Lustre)? Unarmed and without a concrete plan, Eva must make life-or-death choices as her options dwindle. Will she fulfill her mission, or will the night claim her life instead?

A Gift to Filipino Audiences
In celebration of MMFF’s 50th anniversary, Uninvited stands as a testament to the unparalleled excellence of Filipino filmmaking. Mentorque Productions, following the massive success of the MMFF 2023 entry Mallari, teams up with Project 8 Projects to craft a movie that guarantees a meaningful and unforgettable experience for viewers.

“We understand the challenges Filipinos face today,” shares Mentorque CEO John Bryan Diamante. “Watching a movie in theaters is a luxury, so we made sure this is worth every peso.”

It’s indeed a full cinematic experience in theaters this Christmas!

Cignal TV launches "Tabi Po" The Series on SARI SARI Channel

"Tabi Po" The Series on Sari Sari Channel of Cignal TV

"Aswang," others say it's just part of Filipino folklore, while the others continue to disregard and doubt about its existence and for some, they actually believe because they had their own share of experience. As for me, my understanding of "Aswang" or the flesh-eating creature disguised as human too, is that it's a kind of sickness or syndrome, which they inherited from their ancestors. I was able to gather and thought of this legendary notion from my grandmother whom we also call our family's version of "Lola Basyang," and from different articles, hearsays and films.

My grandmom, never runs out of interesting and very thrilling stories to tell. She was born and raised in a small town in Catanduanes in Bicol Region. I hope I had her very retentive memory and the enthusiasm she has whenever she talks about her so-called "Aswang Chronicles." Anyway, my curiosity about the "Aswang" creatures was triggered because of her. :))

I am a fan of horror films, stories and anecdotes, that's why when I've learned about the newa that Cignal TV will launch the "Tabi Po" series in their SARI SARI Channel, I felt the thrill and excitement already. Seldom do we know that a horror-thriller tv series like "Tabi Po," would be actually seen and watched by us, spectators in this very modern age and technology.

You know sometimes we really have to look back and appreciate some things that were taken from the past. We would not be here if it wasn't from our ancestors and all their speculative beliefs after all. :)

The cast, writer and director of "Tabi Po," the series during its media launch held at URBN Bar in Timog, Quezon City.

Two questions that's been bugging me: One. Do "Aswangs"  really exist?
Two. If the answer to my first question if YES, did they manage to be alive and hunt people down 'til this present time? What's your take on this?

This is AJ Muhlach who plays Elias, during  one of his scenes in the pilot episode, how horrifying right?!

During the medial launch, singer Nicole performed "Tabi Po" sountrack, entitled "Mi Amor." Watch it here.

Tabi Po tells the story of Elias, a neophyte aswang. Born from a tree during the country’s Spanish era, Elias embarks on a journey with two older aswangs, Tasyo and Sabel, in the quest to understand their true nature. Along the way, Elias meets Salome, a sex slave of the friars, and falls in love with her. In the middle of a rising revolution, Elias is forced to face his own battles – his love for Salome versus his hunger for flesh, the growing rift between himself and Tasyo, the society's stigma with aswangs, and the battle with his own inner demons.

Unlike anything on TV now, Tabi Po shows love, beauty, amidst the horrific lives of these creatures called aswang. Where did they come from? What is their purpose? Is there more to the massive killing, gore and bloodshed typically associated with them? Know the untold stories behind the aswang in this new cinematic tv masterpiece.

This series is a TV adaptation of Mervin Malonzo’s best-selling graphic novel series with the same title that won the National Book Awards for Graphic Literature. Directed by award-winning director Paul Basinilio, Tabi Po stars a powerhouse cast led by Luis Alandy as Tasyo, Phoebe Walker as Sabel, Jourdanne Castillo as Salome, and AJ Muhlach as Elias.

If you wanna check out the replays of "Tabi Po," The Series, here are the schedules:

Find out which side will prevail, Elias’ true bloodthirsty nature or his deep feelings for the girl he loves the most. This epic tale premieres on October 27, 2017, and will air every Friday at 8:00 PM until December 1, 2017. Catch it on the SARI-SARI Channel, brought to you by the Philippines' premier pay TV provider, Cignal TV.

Jerico Estregan stars in "Amalanhig | The Vampire Chronicle"

Jerico Estregan stars in his very first action-horror-thriller movie entitled "Amalanhig"

This is the very first time that I've heard of the term "Amalanhig." Just like me, I am pretty sure that you would also like to know anything about it. From what we we've known during the film's presscon, "Amalanhig" is an evil creature in Visayan mythology and folklore, particularly among Hiligaynon speaking groups from Panay Island.

It is a hybrid being (half-man, half-animal) with longer upper canine teeth used to kill its prey. A subspecies living in isolation thirsty for blood. It is a monster cross breed/ mutation between zombies and vampires that may be the missing link between humans and animals. The last survivor of man's genetic ancestors.

What caught my attention in this movie was the mysterious story itself. And since vampires and zombies are also the "in" plots nowadays, I feel much curious about what this movie "Amalanhig The Vampire Chronicle" could offer, a Pinoy version of zombie-vampire genre.

Sanya Lopez

Joining the newest action star if the millennial age is the "Encantadia" star, Sanya Lopez who plays Jerico's girlfriend in the story who also went out with him to pursue the search for "Amalanhig" in a very remote place called San Esteban.

During the presscon, Jerico related to us that, her leading lady in the movie, Sanya was direk Jun Posadas' personal choice. The young Estregan also shared us, "Habang nag-shushoot kami, dahan-dahan din naman nadedevelop 'yung friendship namin through out the set because indirectly, at the back of my mind, we had to because in this movie, girlfriend ko s'ya dito. Kailangan, I had to be charming towards her, I had to be caring towards her so I had to show in the movie na 'hey this girl is whom I love . Na-build naman ang friendship namin througout this movie kasi we had a kissing scene " Jerico also shared to us that he did all the minor and major stunts in this movie. 'Atta boy!!!

Jerico and Sanya

Jerico Estregan showed his super fit body during "Amalanhig" presscon. It was surely worth every sweat he shed and effort he made.

The newest millennial action star, Jerico Estregan who is also Jorge Antonio Genaro J. Ejercito in real life belongs to the very iconic showbiz clan. He was the third son of action star in the 80's and former Laguna governor E.R. Ejercito (Jeorge Estregan) and Pagsanjan, Laguna Mayor and former actress Girlie Maita Ejercito. Jerico is also the grandson of the multi-awarded movie actor, the late George Estregan and Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.

He has appeared in several films like his dad's film, "General Emilio Aguinaldo," "Asiong Salonga,"  where he played the young Asiong , also in "Muslim Magnum 357," "Across the Crescent Moon," and "Mandirigma." We should also take note that Jerico has still two upcoming action films entitled "Ben Tumbling Robinhood ng Malabon" and "Pancho Villa" where he plays the legendary Filipino boxer.

During our interview, he was proud to say that, his family wanted to consistently produce quality movies for the moviegoers to see and to give jobs to the people not only from the main scene but to the people behind the camera.

As of now, he is taking his Masteral Degree in Communications Major in Applied Mass Media in De La Salle University Manila and is currently Nike's ambassador. Apart from his numerous awards and recognitions, Jerico remains grounded. The 25 year old actor is very well-rounded and is very active in sports and other physical activities such as athletics/ track and field, mixed martial arts (MMA), Parkour, gymnastics, and Arnis de Mano. He is also knowledgeable in Microsoft programs, photo & video editing and is currently active in media production communication, hosting, acting, dancing and sports coaching.

Jerico poses with his very supportive dad, E.R. Ejercito during the presscon

Just a brief plot of "Amalanhig The Vampire Chronicle:"

Jerico and Sanya both belong to the graduating medical students who found a mysterious unfinished letter with blood stains and infos about human vampirism virus. Finding this, their group proceeded with their research. They went to a San Esteban, one of the barangays of the remote municipality called Pilar. The letter by the way came from the Chief of Police of that place.

Their search started on Maundy Thursday during the Holy Week, their main mission is to interview a cult leader and faith healer known as Amang Kulas. In the event of their quest, the group still decided to pursue their mission despite the warning of Amang Kulas. Incidentally, the following day, which is Good Friday, a lunar eclipse will take place, blood moon or Hunter's moon on a Good Friday is a bad omen for the people of Pilar. An impending doom and danger for the group who are also strangers to the place awaits. They had even suspected Amang Kulas as the "Amalanhig."

With this plot, you would now imagine how terrifying and horrible the scenes would be! A mixture of zombie and vampire in the middle of nowhere?! My gosh! No way! I wouldn't risk my life. But these millennials were so brave, risk-taker and adventurous. I really wanna find out how would they face the real struggle that they have to experience.

So if you're a fan of zombies and vamoires and action/ horror/ thriller films, this one's for you!

Brought to us by Viva Films and VicVal BlueShowing Sapphire Productions, this movie is showing on September 20, 2017 in cinemas nationwide!

See you there!!!

Me and my blogger/friends with Jerico Estregan and his dad, Mr. ER Ejercito during "Amalanhig" presscon

"Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz" Graded B by the CEB

"Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz," is a Filipino horror film by the same creators of the blockbuster movie, "Seklusyon." Initial offering of Lamikaze Pictures, a joint venture project of VIVA Films and Reality Entertainment produced by no other than, award-winning director Erik Matti and directed by Katski Flores. This serves as her comeback film. Graded B by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB) and rate R-13 by the MTRB.

So what does it mean if a particular movie was rated "A" or "B" by the CEB? I've done my research and Wikipilipinas.org says, "The Board reviews and grades the quality of films that are to be shown to the public. It also awards tax incentives to films graded “A” and “B” as a way of encouraging Filipino filmmakers to produce more quality films and increase the international marketability of Philippine cinema."

I guess, this is a better way of encouraging Filipino filmmakers to really make an effort to produce and create such quality films that can pass international standards as well. Goan thinking! Well anyway, having received such "B" grade, this movie "Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz," is one horror film to watch.

Now for my review, the setting was within a local province.

Sarah Lahbati
Sarah Lahbati plays Ruth Liwanag, a police officer facing an entity darker than she’s ever encountered. This is her big screen comeback after seven years.  Her last film was also a horror film called “White House”.

Sarah Lahbati as Ruth Liwanag

Shortly after moving into a new town and still grieving over the death of her brother, Ruth witnesses a young woman named Leah (Shy Carlos) jump out of a balcony. Joining the investigation, she must piece together the lies and secrets of the people close to Leah before the demon takes hold of her.

Sarah expressed her excitement over this project with an instagram post of her photo with Erik Matti and Katski Flores, whom she called “veteran director” and “genius director”, respectively.  She captioned it with, “seriously cannot wait for you to watch Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz.”

Sarah with real life partner Richard Gutierrez during the movie's special screening in Galleria

Ruth, is a plain example of a woman inflicted with many pains of her past and is still suffering from it, she finds refuge by going back to their hometown. But the horrific scenes and situations that she has engaged into has haunted her even more also appearing in her dreams. This odd happenings has developed something inside her that would even create more conflicts and puzzle in her character and will still be evident until the ending. (without spoiling).

I haven't watched Sarah's acting on big screen before, but I've watch few of her acting stints on tv, I must commend her for portraying a role that's exactly opposite of her real personality. She gave justice to her character and I can't seem to notice any trace of her being a "kikay," or "bubbly."  Playing Ruth, the police officer is something new to her and I thought she dig it and it was a rough and tough one.

Shy Carlos
After her “Tasya Fantasya” series on TV5, Shy Carlos takes on another title role, but this time in a much darker fantasy story, “Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz”.   This is her second lead role in a horror movie following “Chain Mail” in 2015.

Leah has a reputation of being simple and innocent, but this is brought into question when she begins to act in strange ways that cause harm to those around her.  She grows fearful and helpless as things  completely get out of hand.  Her hope lies in Ruth (Sarah Lahbati), a police officer investigating on her case, but the devil is out to get her as well.

Shy Carlos as Leah Dela Cruz

I've seen Shy as a young girl, she was one of the members of  Viva Records' all-girl group Pop Girls along with amother Viva artist, Nadine Lustre way back in 2009. Aside from possessing a great voice, she also feels comfortable in acting and I can also feel that on screen whenever I watch her.

Pretty and friendly Shy Carlos during "Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz" special screening held at Robinsons Movie World in Galleria

Growing up, Shy's veratility has developed and for every project she makes, her performance is always recognizable. Aside from having joined some youth-oriented shows on tv like the "Bagets" aired on TV5 Manila, playing best friends to the lead characters in romcom movies like Viva Films' "Girlfriend for Hire," and some dramatic stints she has done in "MMK" (Maalaala Mo Kaya), Shy was also part of the horror film, "Chain Mail," shown in 2015.

According to the very talented artist, her preparations for her title-roler film, "Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz," was, they all did a workshop to immerse themselves into their respective characters. In this movie, we should not expect scenes like those of other Hollywood exorcism flicks like "The Exorcist," wherein the lead role played by Linda Blair, being possessed by a demon, was tied on her bed throwing up unpleasant entities from her mouth, bad-mouthing the priest while the priest has to go thru a lot of struggles and demonic battle and perform exorcism. Here in "Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz," the writer did away from that.

Leah's possessed character has to jump from the balcony of their house and go through the woods poorly lit in the middle of the night and climb up a tree. These scenes you really have to look forward to, because according to Shy, she did all the stunts here (brave girl) and that's one thing I admire about her. The shifts in her characters and facial expressions was very crucial but she did it and I know she also did her best. I commend her for that, since most of the weight of the story really rely on her character, I thought she nailed it.

Shy in one of her horrifying complex scenes in the movie

Julian Trono
Prince of the Dance Floor Julian Trono won’t be able to dance his way out of terror in the movie         “Ang Pagsanib Kay Leah Dela Cruz."

Julian plays Gabriel, a young man who likes bringing good vibes to people.  He is childhood friends with Leah (Shy Carlos) and has deep affections for her.  When Leah begins to act strange, to the extent of jumping from a balcony, he begs a police officer (Sarah Lahbati) to investigate.  But what he’ll find out about Leah might break his heart.

Julian Trono plays Gabriel

I've known Julian since his GMA Artist days, I first encountered him during the "Niño," blogcon aired on GMA Network in the year 2014 and he was seventeen years old that time. Being such an eloquent dancer, he was more inclined and was trained to perform in a Korean Pop (K-Pop) system. His first love is dancing actually according to him but Julian has also a distinct singing voice that's why Viva Records has signed him up via his debut single "Balang Araw."

Julian Trono during the movie's special screening in UP Cine Adarna

Julian's character as Gabriel is an innocent looking and very friendly young man who sees life very lightly and that he feels positive in everything that's happening around him. But the dark side of his character was, he isn't ready for the ugly truth, for the real world, for the real battle of life. Being Leah's childhood friend and love interest, he's full of hope that someday, they'll be together in a "relationship."

Julian and Shy together at the special screening held at UP Cine Adarna

Sarah Lahbati and Julian Trono in one of their scenes in the movie

One question that was brought up during their meet and greet/ Q&A portion right after the movie's special screening at UP Cine Adarna was, "Is there any relevance to Gabriel's character the way he always gives Ruth (Sarah) a hug everytime they were together in a scene?" Actually those acts of Gabriel was a breath of fresh air, just like an ice-breaker, a relief in the movie. Maybe the writer of the director has intended to include that for the purpose of not to drag the scenes. It was quite effective, to tell you honestly we really find it yes, a bit annoying if you pertain to his character but it was entertaining though. You can hear the different reactions from the audience and it has created an impact huh?! So, better take note of those "hug" scenes. :))

Gabriel's character is a proof that, no matter how saintly or innocent you are, there's always a triggering factor that could unleash our dark sides. So goes the phrase, "There's a demon in all of us." But I am only talking about the story and its characters okay, I am not reiterating that it could also happen to all of us. Of course, we all have our God, our beliefs and if we just hold on to our faith and love God above all, I am pretty sure nothing could ever go wrong. Just lead the straight and right path. However, we are all "Anak ng Diyos," (Children of God). Take note of that!

One last thing, I just wanna comment on Marite's character (Leah's Mom), maybe if they have gotten another actress that could be more fitting to the very her delicate role, it could add to the glory of the whole film but it's my opinion anyway, we are all entitled to it, right?!

Overall, this movie will give you the thrills, the terrifying screams are there and the horrific and breath-taking scenes will keep you hanging (in a good scary way)  and will go through your heads thinking ... how could this movie end?

Do watch it with your family, loved ones and friends, because it's good to be screaming back there and teasing each other while being scared all at the same time!

Congrats guys! You did it!!!

WATCH OUT FOR “THE STRANGERS”

Every year, during the Christmas season, we always anticipate the parade of stars, the revolutionary movies, and recognition given by one of the prestigious award-giving bodies that would conclude it all.
I am talking about the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) which is now on its 38th glorious year.
This merry month of December, we could witness a different kind of film filled with suspense, horror, drama, adventure, about family ties and domestic issues. As we enter the world where nothing is ever what it seems... it’s the world of “The Strangers.” It’s Quantum Films and MJM Productions newest venture under the helm of Lawrence Anthony Fajardo, whose recent work as a director include “Posas,” – which won Best Film in the Director’s Showcase division of this year’s Cinemalaya and was also given the same recognition at the Hanoi Film Festival in Vietnam.

The Cast of "The Strangers" during their Grand Presscon

We were always told by our parents that, “Never talk to strangers” or “Beware of the strangers.” And to that effect, the plot of the story began. Putting aside their differences, a family travels out of town on the eve of the fraternal twins’ 18th birthday, namely Pat (Julia Montes) and Max (Enrique Gil). They were accompanied by their parents Roy (Johnny Revilla) and Evelyn (Cherry Pie Picache), their grandfather Pete (Jaime Fabregas) and his temporary caretaker, Paloma (Janice de Belen) and their newly-hired driver Toning (Nico Antonio) reaching a far-flung town of Murcia.

Their long journey has turned into a much unexpected nightmare for all of them. They were being haunted by their guilt and conscience resulting from the incident that their van had accidentally hit an old woman while they were on their way. Filled with fear and shaken, still, they went out of the van to check for the victim but to their surprise, the supposed body of the old woman had vanished.
Their horrifying experience had then begun having reached a small village; they were trapped in a strange place.... full of STRANGERS.

This film also stars JM de Guzman and Enchong Dee who said, “First film naming tatlo (referring to Julia and Enrique), to have a film in the MMFF. Ike-claim ko na ang galing namin dito. Sure ako doon kahit di ko pa napapanood ng buo ‘yung pelikula, kasi alam ko na binigay namin ang lahat ng makakaya namin habang ginagawa namin s’ya.”

Watch out for "The Strangers" in theaters near you coming on Christmas Day, December 25, 2012.

"The Healing" Movie : The freedom to choose... and life's consequences

Let us all admit, aside from consulting to different medical practitioners, engaging into various laboratory tests and going to the clinics or hospitals, Filipinos somehow, would really result into getting the services of an "albularyo" to perform "healing" sessions. In some ways or another, we also keep this "option" within us that sometimes we ask their help to do some rituals like "tawas" and other "healing-related" activities. I guess this is all part of the Filipino culture that we tend to believe and somehow establish faith to these so-called "faith healers." My question is, "Are we ready and aware of its consequences?"

I guess it's high-time that we get to witness and watch a new brand of suspense, horror and drama movie being brought to us by Star Cinema, entitled "The Healing." Incidentally, the said movie was graded A by the MTRCB and has granted it a double rating (R-13 and R-18); the first time to happen in the history of Philippine Cinema. This is also the first time that a very delicate theme like this was tackled in-depth in local film.

Still gorgeous as ever @36 :))

The "Star for all Seasons" and Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos, lead star of "The Healing" was so elated on the ratings they've received for the movie, she said direk Chito Rono really fought for that, so the moviegoers would have the freedom to choose between the two options. More choices, more audience will be captured. :)) Isn't it amazing?!

Gov. Vilma Santos (center) flanked by writer Roy C. Iglesias (left) and direk Chito S. Rono
during "The Healing" Bloggers conference held at ABS-CBN ELJ Bldg.

On the other hand, award-winning writer Mr. Roy C. Iglesias couldn't be happier when his story was approved since this was really tailored-made to the "Star for all Seasons." Gov. Vilma Santos have been hoping and dreaming for this kind of movie, she said, "I've been asking Chito for so long for something like this and I'm so glad that it's finally happening. With the undeniable top caliber of Star Cinema, Direk Chito, and our award-winning cast, how can I go wrong?"

The whole cast of "The Healing"

In honor of Vilma's 50th anniversary in showbiz, Star Cinema gathered an all-star highly acclaimed powerhouse cast composed of Kim Chiu, Janice de Belen, Mark Gil, Martin del Rosario, Allan Paule, Cris Villanueva, Daria Ramirez, Ces Quesada, Ynez Veneracion, Simon Ibarra, Abi Bautista, Joel Torre, Chinggoy Alonso, Mon Confiado, Carmi Martin and Pokwang! The legendary actress can only say nothing but high praises and flattering remarks about her co-stars who were equally professional and brilliant in their own crafts.

Gov. Vilma was very friendly and accommodating. She really made my day! Thanks so much and love u Gov.! Batangas is so "lucky" having someone like you! :))

Ate Vi, as she's fondly called before she became Lipa's Mayor for three consecutive elections and eventually got elected as Governor of Batangas in 2007, plays the role of Rosette Angeles, a very simple woman who's only prime motive is to help her family and friends suffering from ailments and various illnesses. Of all these changes and turn of events in their lives, what could possibly happen next?

Don't let all your curiosities ponder, have it answered! Do watch this newest masterpiece from the film master himself, direk Chito S. Roño, Vilma's very first ever suspense horror movie, "The Healing."

Please watch this video to enlighten you about the movie's double rating R-13 (censored version) and R-18 (director's cut) as Gov. Vilma Santos talks about it during their
Bloggers Conference.

Roy C. Iglesias, Gov. Vilma Santos and direk Chito S. Rono were all smiles after their "bonding" with the bloggers. :))
